Welcome to Alkham Valley Historical Research Group web pages dedicated to the history and archaeology of the Valley of Alkham. The AVHRG is made-up of volunteers & students lead by our archco-geophysicist with no commercial funding. The newly formed group will rely mainly on the generosity of the residents and friends of the Alkham Valley. The success of the project will be determined by the strength of historical interest and support afforded to this once in a lifetime opportunity to survey the valley.

In the 1980s an Iron Age cremation bucket was found near the church in Alkham.  It now resides in a London Museum. Now the finds from the Wolverton Project are at risk of being hidden away in storage for the foreseeable future or snapped up by a national museum which is far better funded than our local ones. Wouldn't it be better to keep such items in a Kent museum?  We need to raise £12,000 in order to conserve and display the Wolverton material and in reality we are going to have to do this independently.  We need your help.  The Alkham Valley promises to be a treasure trove of archaeological sites and finds but without continued support it may remain hidden which would be a terrible loss to both our understanding of the history of Kent and the British Isles as a whole.

This website will show case every aspect of the AVHRG's work including completed excavations and surveys, notable finds and work in progress.  For the most up to date information visit the News Page.  If you are a resident of the Alkham Valley and have ever found anything on your land or in your garden that you think might be of archaeological importance or if you would like to get involved please see the Contacts Page.  Please remember that any financial help you can give us is much needed.
